Hoi Jilles,

Rune! Thanks for the comments and the Danish point of view. The point about mobility hadn't crossed my mind as such. This must give rise to subtler differences (more family businesses? more occurences where husband and wife work for the same employer?). In any case, it reminds me of emancipation, which is in the remainder of topics I want to write about.

I will more than gladly take you up on points 2 and 4: seems like an excellent start of 2009!

Hey Jilles. Nice article and good idea! I am hoping to see a lot of comments on this one :)

I have some extra added bonus information for you and your readers:

1. Cars and taxes: Actually because of the high price you pay for a car in DK people are actually less mobile when it comes to picking a job. If the company is too far away from your home you might end up with having to buy a second car (one for your wife!) thus actually getting a much lower bottomline income. Bad thing i would say...

2. Restaurants: We do go out - both to eat and drink - but culturally it is most often something we danes do in weekends. And btw. you are completely right about your points about us being "home people". We tend to like to keep a great part of our social interactions close to heart. But still we do often go to the movies, play pool, do sports during weeknight - so these things would also be nice ice-breakers into the social domain of the troglodyte-danes. Offer: come by one day and my family will serve you dinner and wine... :)

3. Public tv: yes we do have two completely public channels, but we (that is every dane owning a tv or radio) also do have to pay an astronomical high license (2100 kr) for those. So perhaps commercials would have been better.

4. Added bonus: Alcohol. We drink appr. 2,5 liters of pure alchol more than the average dutch person. Why? Colder up here? More boring? The dutch have other substitutes in the realm of getting pissed? I dunno... but basic fact - so get started Jilles.

Well i never encountered a user friendly beamer, i am not that surprised that they just put the light indicator of a button in a different position. Don't even get me started about the preference menu's on beamer. And since a beamer is standing usal far away from the actual laptop or desktop computer, why didn't all the beamer company's out there switch to wireless when this technology became possible? (beamer in the picture with all the beautiful wires at the back).
Apple, beamers please!
